Helping your child to be successful at school

You know your child best and parents are the only people who will be involved with your child from Kindergarten to the end of school. One of your roles is to advocate for your child and to be effective you need to build positive relationships with the classroom teacher and other school staff that will support open communication and problem solving.

You need to understand the special education system and know what to do when you have concerns. Articles in this section will provide tips on effective advocacy and how you can help your child to advocate for themselves. There are also tips on helping your child at home to build the skills and knowledge they need to be successful at school.

A little about Alison

As the mother of two girls, one with cerebral palsy, I have been advocating in the school system for almost 25 years. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geography and never expected to become so involved with the school system and supports for students with disabilities.
