Easter Seals Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) Program

March 15, 2021 by Alison Morse

What is the Easter Seals Ontario SEAC Volunteer Program?

Easter Seals Ontario is eligible to nominate representatives to school board SEACs who meet the criteria to be a SEAC Member. Ideally, Easter Seals will nominate two people for each school board, one of whom will be the main representative and the other will be the alternate representative. The alternate is encouraged to attend all meetings, but will only be the voting member in the absence of the main representative.

How can I get involved in the Easter Seals Ontario SEAC Volunteer Program?

Easter Seals volunteers are required to complete an application form, provide two references and sign a Volunteer Code of Conduct. After review of the application and speaking to the references, the volunteer will be nominated to the school board SEAC. The decision on the appointment of SEAC members is made by the school board Trustees.

The Easter Seals Ontario SEAC Volunteer Program has representatives on the following school boards:

  • Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board
  • Durham District School Board
  • Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board
  • Halton Catholic District School Board
  • Halton District School Board
  • Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board
  • Hastings and Prince Edward County District School Board
  • Limestone District School Board
  • London Catholic District School Board
  • Peel District School Board
  • Ottawa Carleton District School Board
  • Renfrew County District School Board
  • Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board
  • Thames Valley District School Board
  • Toronto District School Board
  • Toronto Catholic District School Board
  • Waterloo Region District School Board
  • York Region District School Board
  • York Catholic District School Board

Easter Seals Ontario is a member of the Provincial Parent Association Advisory Committee on Special Education Advisory Committees (PAAC on SEAC).  Members of PAAC on SEAC meet monthly to share information and resources to support the work of SEAC members, including the PAAC on SEAC Effective Practices Handbook for SEAC Members (2010).

A little about Alison

As the mother of two girls, one with cerebral palsy, I have been advocating in the school system for almost 25 years. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geography and never expected to become so involved with the school system and supports for students with disabilities.
