Starting School is an important step in every child’s life

Starting School can be a worrying time for parents of children with special needs as they wonder about whether the school will welcome their child or if the school can support their child’s needs. Starting school is an emotional time for all parents as their child takes those important first steps towards independence. For a child with special needs there are additional concerns about accessibility, about using their communication or mobility equipment at school, or whether the child will get the help they need in the classroom.

Good planning and open communication with the school are both key to the success of the transition into school. To help plan a smooth transition this section includes:

A little about Alison

As the mother of two girls, one with cerebral palsy, I have been advocating in the school system for almost 25 years. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geography and never expected to become so involved with the school system and supports for students with disabilities.
