Transitions can be a Challenge for Students with Special Needs

Some students struggle with transitions between activities or room to room. Other students struggle when teachers change and they move from grade to grade. All students are nervous about big transitions, such as starting school, starting high school or leaving school.

Students with physical disabilities face additional challenges because of accessibility, the equipment they use for mobility or communication, or the health or personal care supports they need at school. Articles in this section provide tips on preparing for all of these transitions. Key articles are also available in French, Farsi, Punjabi, Spanish and Simplified Chinese and links can be found at the top of each article.

A little about Alison

As the mother of two girls, one with cerebral palsy, I have been advocating in the school system for almost 25 years. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geography and never expected to become so involved with the school system and supports for students with disabilities.
